Origin

In the far northwest corner of Guatemala, where the highlands reach their greatest elevation and the air turns cool and clean, lies Huehuetenango — one of the most celebrated coffee-growing regions in Central America and one of the few areas in Guatemala where altitude alone creates the conditions for truly exceptional arabica. At 1,800 to 2,000 meters above sea level, the Huehuetenango highlands are shaped by a unique microclimate: hot, dry winds from the Tehuantepec plain in Mexico moderate temperatures and protect the coffee from frost, while the region's clay mineral soils and defined wet and dry seasons deliver the structure and sweetness that have made Huehuetenango coffee a benchmark for Central American specialty buyers.

This lot is sourced from 400 family-owned farms within the municipality of Huehuetenango, each producer cultivating coffee on an average of just two acres — intercropped with corn and beans grown for their own household consumption. The farms are small, the practices traditional, and the commitment to quality absolute. Because most producers lack the infrastructure to process their own coffee, they partner with Unitrade Coffee, whose centrally located wet mill in Huehuetenango receives cherry deliveries from across the region and processes each lot with the consistency and care that small farms rarely have the resources to achieve alone. Beyond logistics, Unitrade founded CoffeeCare — an organization dedicated to education, nutrition, and health — ensuring that the children of these farming families have safe, supportive places to learn and grow while the harvest is underway. Every bag of this coffee is, in a real sense, a contribution to that community.

Character

Huehuetenango coffee is defined by clarity, balance, and a natural sweetness that expresses itself with quiet confidence rather than dramatic intensity. The cup is clean and precise — medium acidity that brightens without sharpness, medium body that feels substantial without heaviness — and the flavor profile moves through dark chocolate and dried cherry depth into the warm, rounded sweetness of brown sugar, almond, and caramel, with a subtle spice note that lingers on the finish. It is a coffee that is immediately approachable and endlessly satisfying, rewarding both casual drinkers and those paying close attention.

The fully washed process, followed by sun and mechanical drying, preserves the structural clarity that is the hallmark of great Guatemalan highland coffee. Every step — from hand-picking at peak ripeness to careful cherry delivery at the Unitrade mill — is designed to let the terroir of Huehuetenango speak without interference. The Bourbon, Catuaí, and Caturra varieties grown here are time-tested cultivars that thrive at high altitude, contributing a natural sweetness and complexity that newer hybrid varieties rarely match.

Why Huehuetenango

For those who want the definitive expression of Central American highland arabica — clean, sweet, balanced, and honest — Huehuetenango delivers with the quiet authority of an origin that has earned its reputation cup by cup, farm by farm. Behind every bag is a community of 400 families who have built their livelihoods on two acres of mountain coffee, supported by a supply chain that invests in their children's futures as seriously as it invests in coffee quality. This is specialty coffee at its most purposeful: exceptional in the cup, meaningful at the source.
