Origin
In the highlands of southern Ethiopia, carved from the East African Rift Valley, lies Sidama — one of the most celebrated and complex coffee-growing regions in the world, and one of the few places on earth where arabica coffee still grows in its original highland habitat. At elevations between 1,550 and 2,200 meters, Sidama's farms are blanketed in fertile volcanic soil, sustained by 1,200 to 2,000 millimeters of annual rainfall, and shaped by the dramatic diurnal temperature swings that characterize the East African highlands. The cool nights slow cherry development, concentrating sugars and building the dense, complex beans that have made Sidama coffee a benchmark for specialty buyers worldwide.
Most of Sidama's coffee is grown by smallholder farmers tending family plots of just a few hectares — shaded by enset trees and native forest, cultivated with traditional organic practices passed down through generations. Cherries are hand-picked at peak ripeness and delivered to local washing stations or community drying beds, where processing is handled with the same care that defines every step of the Sidama supply chain. The region's long-standing reputation for quality is such that, historically, coffees from neighboring areas were often sold under the Sidama name — a testament to the esteem the origin commands in the global market.
Character
Sidama coffee occupies a unique space in the Ethiopian spectrum — more structured and fruit-forward than Yirgacheffe, more elegant and refined than Harrar — offering a range of expression that rewards both washed and natural processing equally. Washed Sidama lots are crisp and transparent, with a tea-like clarity that carries bright lemon, bergamot, and soft jasmine aromatics over a clean, balanced body. Fine acidity and a lingering citrus-honey finish make washed Sidama one of the most consistently satisfying cups in the specialty world.
Natural Sidama tells a different but equally compelling story. Cherries dried slowly on raised beds over two to three weeks absorb the full character of the fruit — yielding a cup of vivid berry sweetness, stone fruit depth, and a jammy, wine-like complexity that evolves dramatically as it cools. The heirloom landraces at the heart of Sidama production — particularly varieties 74110 and 74112, selected for both disease resistance and exceptional cup quality — contribute a genetic expressiveness that no commercially bred variety can replicate. These are not clones or hybrids, but genetically diverse, deeply site-specific trees that encode the flavor of their soil, altitude, and microclimate into every bean.

Why Sidama
For those who want to understand Ethiopian coffee at its most expressive and most complete, Sidama is the essential starting point. It offers the full range of what the origin can achieve — the floral clarity of a great washed lot, the fruit intensity of a well-made natural — without the extremes that can make other Ethiopian regions an acquired taste. Grown by families who have farmed these highlands for generations, processed with care at community washing stations and sun-drenched drying beds, and built on a genetic heritage that is irreplaceable anywhere else on earth, Sidama coffee is, simply put, one of the great cups of the world.
